The South Carolina Legislature holds a Republican veto-proof supermajority in both chambers. This means Republicans have enough seats to override gubernatorial vetoes and bypass opposition filibusters without needing votes from the Democratic minority.
Controversy Surrounding Judge Will Wheeler’s Appointment
Yet, this same Republican supermajority just appointed liberal Judge Will Wheeler to the Circuit Court by majority vote of the S.C. Senate and S.C. House of Representatives.

Judge Will Wheeler is a former Democratic S.C. House Rep. representing District 50. He is known for his extreme liberal positions.
South Carolina House District 50 represents portions of Lee, Sumter, and Kershaw counties. As of the 2025 special election cycle, this district primarily covers all of Lee County, along with parts of Kershaw and Sumter counties.
Of course, First Vice Chairman of the S.C. Judiciary, Jay Jordan once again betrayed S.C. Republicans by voting for Wheeler.
