The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce just flooded social media with a brilliant Influencer Strategy, changing the channel on the Myrtle Beach Mayor’s recent gaffes and the recent downtown Ocean Boulevard shooting.
Implementing an Effective Influencer Strategy
Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune actually blamed Myrtle Beach hotels and merchants for the downtown shooting and stated that tourists could expect the same until new investors downtown materialized.
This infuriated local hotel owners and merchants who have scrambled to salvage the summer tourist season.
Realizing that legacy media is all but dead, bright minds at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce flooded TikTok and other social media channels putting a score of social media influencers to work.

This same social influencer strategy is also being embraced by individual restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. The influencer industry has become a lucrative profession. One local social media influencer even flashed the cash as she was depositing it in the bank this past week.
Sadly, tourists who were in town during the April shooting have also released graphic videos of the event. One video, in particular, captured the actual police shooting as it occurred.
The social influencer strategy is important as all of the greater Myrtle Beach area is very safe. Only the downtown area in the city of Myrtle Beach is dangerous. The area is most dangerous on weekends at night.
Mayor Bethune falsely claimed low rent hotels caused the violence. Local merchants know that the violence is caused by what they call “100 milers”. These day trippers live in towns like Fayetteville, N.C., Bennettsville, S.C., Florence, S.C., Columbia, S.C. and other small towns within 2 hours drive of Myrtle Beach.
A large component of these day trippers do not rent rooms. They visit on a weekend day staying late into the night only to drive back to their home town. They also come to town to “do business”.
With nearly 800 cameras at major intersections and locations around the city, including parks and public facilities, how the mayor and police chief could not be aware of this trend is a mystery.
Understanding why these day trippers are so attracted to downtown Ocean Boulevard should be the Mayor’s top priority.
