Chris Smith promoted to Assistant Police Chief as Marty Brown retires

The Myrtle Beach Police Department is pleased to announce the promotion of Captain Chris Smith to Assistant Police Chief. Newly promoted Assistant Police Chief Smith began his career with the department as a police recruit in 2007. After 15 years of dedicated leadership within the MBPD, he was promoted to Captain in 2022. He will be sworn in as Assistant Police Chief tomorrow, Friday, February 28.

A believer in enhancing public safety through innovation and collaboration, Assistant Police Chief Smith has contributed to significant departmental advancements across multiple divisions. Some of these advancements include the K9 Unit expansion, take-home vehicle program and the development of the Intelligence Unit.

As Assistant Chief, Capt. Smith looks forward to working alongside a talented and motivated team to share knowledge, achieve goals and foster a positive work environment.

“Through mentorship, both past and present, I look forward to carrying on the traditions and legacies of this position while embracing new perspectives, trends and strategies to foster growth, consistency and a high level of public safety,” said Capt. Smith.

Assistant Myrtle Beach Police Chief Marty Brown will retire from the Myrtle Beach Police Department in April after 31 years of dedicated service to the residents and visitors of Myrtle Beach.

Born and raised in Myrtle Beach, Assistant Police Chief Brown began his career with the Myrtle Beach Police Department on April 4, 1994, as an Auxiliary Police Officer. His leadership, dedication and commitment to public safety led to his promotion to Assistant Chief in 2017. Since then, he has played a pivotal role in department advancements and the strengthening of community partnerships.

“I’ve worked with the MBPD since I was 21 years old, so this is my second family.  I have reached goals and accomplished so many things with the amazing support I have received,” Assistant Chief Brown said. “I am so proud of the transformations I’ve witnessed in the MBPD over the last 31 years. I want to thank all of you who have helped guide me through my amazing career. Now, it’s time I focus on my family and chapter two of our lives together.”


“Assistant Chief Brown has been an instrumental part of our team’s success and growth. He has undoubtedly left this department stronger than it was when he started. He is a true partner, friend and professional who has demonstrated his passion for law enforcement and his deep commitment to this community. While we will greatly miss him as a team member, we wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter of their lives,” said Police Chief Amy Prock.

Assistant Chief Brown’s last day with the department is Friday, April 4, 2025. In retirement, he looks forward to spending more time with his wife and two sons, traveling and fishing.
