CNN and MSNBC in free fall as independents, podcasters and X rule

New analysis from Nielsen reveals that CNN and MSNBC have experienced a 50% decline in viewership since the US election.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, recent data indicates that CNN and MSNBC experienced a significant decrease in viewership.

Traditional news organizations are struggling to maintain their influence as a new media landscape driven by influencers, podcasters, and independents like MyrtleBeachSC News gain prominence.

Joe Rogan’s podcast and Elon Musk’s social platform X have emerged as significant hubs for political discussions, wielding considerable influence.

“All of us have to come to grips, the legacy media is just not as important as it thinks it is,” Axios CEO Jim VandeHei said Friday on MSNBC. Executives at CNN and MSNBC have not yet come to grips with their loss of media influence, however.

“It’s a relatively small group of people who rely on us for their information,” he added in reference to CNN and MSNBC.

Nielsen’s recent analysis revealed a significant decline in viewership on left-leaning networks, such as MSNBC. Following the election, MSNBC faced intense criticism and experienced a sharp drop of 38% in their average daily viewership, which was previously recorded at 521,000.

“That a president-elect could win so overwhelmingly in popular vote + electoral college while ignoring The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, CBS News, NBC News, & CNN (while spending hours with Joe Rogan) should be a moment of self-reflective reckoning for ‘mainstream’ media,” said Michael Socolow, the University of Maine’s professor of journalism.

According to the data, CNN experienced a 27% decrease in viewership following the election compared to its average of 367,000 daily viewers. CNN and MSNBC bled as viewers abandoned their networks.

MSNBC’s primetime viewership has seen a substantial decline, dropping to 603,000 from over a million after the election, as per a recent analysis by OutKick.

MSNBC’s top-rated show, The Rachel Maddow Show, has experienced a significant decline in viewership, with a reported 56 percent decrease since Donald Trump’s election win. Currently, the show attracts an average of 1.4 million viewers, which is a notable drop from its post-election viewership of 3 million.

CNN’s post-election viewership has experienced a significant decline, with current average viewership plummeting by 46 percent to a mere 401,000 viewers. This decrease seems to be a lasting trend.

Last week, the Food Network had a larger audience than CNN’s struggling primetime shows.

Reportedly, the total viewership for shows like Anderson Cooper 360, The Source featuring Kaitlan Collins, and CNN News Night hosted by Abby Phillip averaged a mere 367,000.

CNN reportedly had an average of 67,000 viewers in the key demographic and ranked 26th in cable ratings for the previous week.

Since the election, CNN has witnessed a decline of 47 percent in day viewership, while MSNBC has experienced a decrease of 35 percent. This indicates a lasting shift in the media landscape, which is unlikely to be reversed.

Ad Week’s data indicates that the ratings of MSNBC’s Morning Joe have been consistently declining since hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski disclosed their decision to resume dialogue with Donald Trump subsequent to their meeting with the president-elect at Mar-a-Lago.
