ESPN bleeds 8 million subscribers as cord cutting continues

In 2022, the data reveals that ESPN witnessed a decline of eight million cable and satellite subscribers. By the end of 2021, their total subscribers stood at approximately 75 million. This loss of eight million subscribers, which equates to an average of nearly 22,000 individuals per day, accounted for 10% of ESPN’s total subscriber base. Moreover, this decline exacerbated their downward spiral from over 100 million subscribers just over ten years ago.

According to Outkick’s Clay Travis, the network’s revenue decline persists, forcing them to reduce their workforce.

ESPN bleeds 8 million subscribers

There are multiple reasons that the network is losing viewership.

  • Going political – Over the past decade ESPN and ABC went political at the worst possible time adopting woke ideology. The network went to war with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The outcome did not work out in the network’s favor.
  • Cord Cutting – ABC/ESPN promises that it’s ESPN+ streaming service will overcome this trend. However, as can be heard in the video above, Travis disputes those claims.
  • Aggregate Streamers – to steady the ship, the network joined streaming services including FUBO, Youtube TV, Sling, etc. These streaming services have greater leverage moving forward.

Cable news is dead. Clay Travis says the sports network is also dead. Travis claims the network will lose more than 22 million subscribers in the next decade.

Sports events are highly probable to transition towards platforms such as X, enabling viewers to actively engage and provide real-time reactions to on-field occurrences.
