Giving Hope Gardens is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Loris, SC. Their mission is to provide work-based experience and opportunities for adults with disabilities. They hire these individuals to maintain the garden and nursery and to sell the produce and plants to the community to help further their mission.
Each year, Giving Hope Gardens hosts their annual themed gala to raise money and awareness for our organization. This year the Giving Hope Gardens gala will be Roaring 20’s themed, and it is being held at The Conference Center at Barefoot Resort on April 25, 2025.

Shameful history former Horry County Police officer stealing from this vital community group
In 2024, a former Horry County Police Officer and municipal clerk faced allegations of embezzling close to $69,000 from a Loris charity supporting special needs adults with employment opportunities.
Giving Hope Gardens worked with local officials to make certain this evil man was brought to justice.
The treasurer of Giving Hope Gardens in Loris embezzled donations and grant money. The nonprofit was collecting funds to grow its initiatives and launched a GoFundMe page.
Charged with the embezzlement of $10,000 or more in public funds, Todd Keith Massey, aged 38, faces six counts of forgery under $10,000 in value, as well as one count of forgery without a specified dollar amount, according to warrants. Massey held the position of treasurer starting from May 2024.
Massey served as an officer at the Horry County Police Department for seven years, starting in 2007. According to a county representative, he previously held the position of city clerk in Loris. Before his current role, Massey was the Vice President of Finance at Providing Hope VA, a veterans charity in Loris. The charity temporarily ceased operations following the CEO’s guilty plea in federal court for unlawful financial transactions.
“This situation has profoundly impacted our small nonprofit and our South Carolina community,” the nonprofit said in a news release. “However, our mission at Giving Hope Gardens remains unwavering: To provide young adults with disabilities the opportunities to develop essential life and work skills, empowering them to thrive and make a positive difference in their communities.
“Given recent events, we are more determined to rebuild and strengthen our organization to continue our vital work. We deeply appreciate the unwavering support of our community during this time and are committed to ensuring that our mission endures.”
Police said Massey took $68,794.36 from the foundation without permission between June and October, using public donations and grants. They also mentioned he forged the chairman’s signature on checks.
Police discovered documents during the investigation revealing that the suspect had moved the funds to accounts under his ownership.
