Myrtle Beach Bowl: Transfer Portal decimates Coastal as untested Tad Hudson to start

Monday, December 23rd, will witness the Myrtle Beach Bowl taking place at Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. CCU has been significantly impacted by the transfer portal in recent times.

Coastal Carolina, with UTSA as their opponent, will have an additional game at home. However, it’s worth mentioning that their starting quarterbacks, Ethan Vasko and Noah Kim, have decided to enter the transfer portal.

According to Tim Beck, the Coastal Carolina Head Coach, Tad Hudson, a redshirt freshman who has not played any games this season, will be the next in line to start at Quarterback. Beck has CCU entering the Myrtle Beach Bowl with 6 wins and 6 losses.

“Tad Hudson will probably be the starter. We have Alex Walker as well,” Beck told reporters, “and then after this meeting, I’m taking all of you outside for tryouts.”

The presence of Free Agency and NIL agreements hinders program development in the modern era, forcing coaches to construct a fresh team annually. During the year 2023, Grayson McCall, the starting quarterback for CCU, joined the portal and eventually transferred to N.C. State, where he commenced his starting role in the current Autumn season.

“There was a lot of excitement at practice because there are a lot of guys that haven’t played a lot that know they are going to,” Beck added.

With untested, Hudson, as the quarterback, could result in the Chanticleers relying on their rushing game, which was 46th in the nation, averaging 178.7 yards per game. Braydon Bennett led the team with 727 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, while Christian Washington contributed 537 yards and five touchdowns.

UTSA, with a record of 6 wins and 6 losses, faces significantly fewer departures compared to Coastal.

“Our kids intend to play and we are rooting and hoping that everybody passes their classes, stays healthy and chooses to play in the bowl game,” coach Jeff Traylor said.

The Roadrunners overcame their initial 3-5 record and secured eligibility for the Myrtle Beach bowl game by winning three consecutive conference matches at home in November.

“The world is telling (players) to collect (social media) posts and collect more offers and collect more attention,” Traylor said. “Our guys want to collect bowl wins, so I’m very excited to be coaching these guys.”

The programs have never played one another before.

The Myrtle Beach Bowl is scheduled for December 23, 2024, at 11:00AM. It will take place at Brooks Stadium, which is situated at Coastal Carolina University.
