The city of Myrtle Beach put up a post on Facebook concerning the demolition of the Coral Sands motel.
The land is privately owned and it is unclear what the owners will do with the vacant lot.
A road closure update to share
Ocean Boulevard, between Third and Fourth Avenues North, is closed from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m. each day through Wednesday, May 21. Please use Flagg Street as a detour, accessible from either avenue. This short road closure is in place to accommodate the demolition of the Coral Sands property.
About the Coral Sands Motel
The Coral Sands shut down in 2021 after being labeled by the Myrtle Beach Police Department as a spot frequented by drug dealers and consumers. The city decided to demolish the motel later that same year.
The Coral Sands motel is being demolished this week.
A spokesperson for the city added that this demolition was already planned and not in connection with an overnight fire.
The vacant motel on Ocean Boulevard between 3rd and 4th Avenue North saw the Myrtle Beach Fire Department respond promptly to a two-alarm fire at around 3 a.m. on May 14th, Wednesday.
Capt. Jonathan Evans warns that neglected structures can pose unforeseen risks to their firefighters.
The initial demolition cost will be covered by the city, but the property owner will need to repay them later on.
