Columbia, S.C. (March 26, 2025) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation will conduct temporary, nighttime closures on the SC 90 bridge over US 17 in Horry County for repairs beginning March 30. The work is expected to be complete in April.
The SC 90 bridge is a vital connection for both local residents and visitors to the Horry County area. With its close proximity to popular attractions like the beaches of Myrtle Beach, maintaining this infrastructure is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient travel. Recent inspections highlighted the need for these repairs to enhance the bridge’s structural integrity and safety features.
Importance of the SC 90 Bridge
During the closures, SCDOT will implement a comprehensive traffic management plan near the SC 90 bridge. This includes detour signs directing drivers to alternate routes to minimize disruptions. Motorists traveling through the area are advised to allow for extra travel time and to consider alternate routes if possible.
Visual aids, such as traffic maps and construction schedules, will be updated regularly on the SCDOT website to keep the public informed about the SC 90 bridge repairs. Community feedback is also encouraged to help enhance the communication process during this repair period.
In addition to safety, these repairs are part of a broader initiative by SCDOT to improve roadway conditions across South Carolina. This initiative is particularly important as the state experiences an increase in tourism and population growth, leading to higher traffic volumes on local roads and bridges.
The closures will be installed nightly beginning at 8 p.m. and will be taken up at 7 a.m. The bridge will be open for daytime and weekend traffic.
Understanding the importance of maintaining infrastructure, SCDOT not only focuses on immediate repairs but also invests in long-term planning. This includes routine inspections, community engagement, and the implementation of sustainable practices to prolong the life of highways and bridges while minimizing environmental impacts.
As part of the Strategic 10-Year Plan, SCDOT is committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents by investing in safer and more efficient transportation options. This plan not only addresses immediate infrastructure needs but also focuses on future growth and development to meet the demands of South Carolina’s evolving economy.
