Patrick Lloyd, the acting Public Information Officer for the City of Myrtle Beach, clarified that Waites’ title change occurred prior to the November elections and was not influenced by the ongoing national discourse surrounding the elimination of DEI policies in prominent corporations. Myrtle Beach DEI and Transgender Child Medical Care

Kelvin Waites was first hired in 2022 to be the city’s Myrtle Beach DEI director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Under his leadership, several initiatives were launched, including community forums and partnerships with local organizations focused on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.

He departed in June 2023 to take up a role in Georgetown but ultimately returned in November 2023 to continue his position as the Myrtle Beach DEI director. Waites assumed the position of the Director of Community Engagement for the city in October 2024.
